The facility
Toyota has created the European Design Development facility in the South of France to help it understand the local influences and styles of the customers it wants to buy its cars.
Nestling into the low hills above the French Côte D’Azur and overlooking the brilliant turquoise waters of the Mediterranean lies the quiet little town of Sophia-Antipolis.
There’s an air of calmness and tranquillity about the place, which belies its importance to global industry. For Sophia-Antipolis lies at the heart of France’s very own ‘Silicon Valley’ and a large number of technology-based corporations have built headquarters, offices or factories in close proximity to the town. Indeed, many of their buildings feature the sort of arresting modern architecture that strives to proclaim that important role in all our futures.
There are three key areas within ED², all specifically geared to the conceptualisation and ultimate production realisation of new Toyota cars:

Design
A large open plan studio houses 30 or so designers, working on everything from futuristic drawings produced exclusively to explore potential styling directions to the final detail alterations to body panels for vehicles that are well on the way to making production. The designer body is split into three teams concentrating on exterior lines, interior styling, and colour and trim.
Model making
Before a paper design can be committed to production, it has to be seen ‘in the flesh’. The basement floor of ED² is dedicated to model making and expert staff that fabricate everything from scale models to full-size rolling replicas of the designers’ efforts. Using steel skeleton chassis frames clad in computer-milled foam, hand-sculpted clay or glass-fibre bodies, once painted, the models and replicas are indistinguishable from genuine cars.
Viewing
A large secluded outside viewing area is available for designers to step back and admire their handiwork. To truly evaluate a car form, it has to be seen outside with reflections. This top secret facility not only allows designs and paint finishes to be seen in daylight, but also lets the team compare proposals to existing products and even competitors. There’s a huge indoor viewing studio, too, with daylight lighting and a vast video wall where computerised models can be shown life size, or themed movies can be run to provide a backdrop for full-size model presentations.
